Mullet on Fly Jan 2013

From Inland Fisheries Ireland

Lovely early season mullet caught on the fly in Cork Harbour

January 10th, 2013 | by Paul Bourke
Angling Guide Richie Ryan reports on good inshore fishing for mullet for his clients in Cork
Welsh angler Andy Davies and Eire Bass guide Richie Ryan reported on their first mullet trip of the year. Andy and Richie ” hook” up every year for a few sessions of fly fishing for this Irish “Bonefish”. Richie says they are a bit easier to catch in the early part of the year. They use small unweighted Czech nymphs and 8 lb. flourocarbon as a very long trace.
The mullet are very difficult to hook due to their hard mouths but often fight harder than bass when hooked. Many fish are lost during frenetic runs and tear line off the reel at a tremendous rate. Richie landed and recorded a fine early season Mullet of over 4 lb. on the fly and quickly returned his fish after a quick photo.

From Inland Fisheries Ireland Site :

A good show of cod in Cork Harbour in recent days

December 14th, 2012 | by Myles Kelly

Eire Bass guide Richie Ryan reports on good cod fishing in Cork Harbour during the week. Having been out the previous week, the guide felt that the cod were too scarce for a decent session. However, as often happens in fishing , Cian his son and close friend and keen angler Paul Carroll had a great session in just a small area in the harbour. The average cod was 3-4 lbs weight with some in the 5-6 lb range. 40 cod were hooked up in a short period with the vast majority returned to fight another day, as can be seen from the YouTube video below.

Having just completed a course on video editing run by Jim Clohessy for the Cork Angling hub, this is the guides first attempt to put a fishing report together using this format. Richie reports that it was a superb course and it was kindly sponsered by Failte Ireland.

From Inland Fisheries Site Nov 2012 :

Whilst fishing a local shore mark for bass recently, guide Richie Ryan got talking to an angler next to him about fishing.

The local fisherman, Noel O Sullivan, expressed his total frustration at not being able to to catch his first bass. Never one to

shy from a challenge, Richie explained who he was and agreed to take him out if he had an available slot on his boat.

A few weeks later Noel was invited to join Sea Hawk with the Eire Bass guide and as the picture shows landed his first

bass with another on the next cast. The lure was the ever popular Savage Gear Sandeel.Needless to say Noel was chuffed

and spent the rest of the day smiling !

To conclude the story, last week Richie rang Noel again for another session.Though mad keen to go himself, he kindly offered

his place to his son TJ who wanted to catch his elusive first bass also. .As can be seen, this angler also had his first bass with the guide,

with three more to follow, also on the Savage Gear Sandeel. Two happy anglers......
